Have you thought about your relationship–with your dog?
No, that’s not a joke.
That question, frivolous as it may seem, is the core concept of a thoughtful, and interactive, exhibit at the Long Beach Museum of Art.
“Architecture for Dogs” opened at LBMA in June, and will be continuing its world tour in Tokyo this fall. The exhibit is the inspiration of noted architect/designer Kenya Hara, who used his talents to look at the world from a dog’s perspective.
Gathering fellow designers together, Kenya Hara assigned each a breed of dog to study–and for whom to build a structure, based on what their observations about that dog’s interaction with its environment. The result: twelve imaginative creations that reflect a specific dog’s needs.
But, the designers didn’t stop there. They also made diagrams of their pieces available for dog owners to download, so they, too, can build something creative for their favorite canines.
Want to know which one your dog might favor? Outside the Long Beach Museum of Art are five of the structures, re-created, in a mini-dog park–and you’re welcome to bring your dog to explore them! Long Beach Museum of Art Executive Director Ron Nelson offered a preview of what you’ll see–and what you may just wind up deciding to build!
“Architecture for Dogs” is on display at the Long Beach Museum of Art from now through Sunday, September 1. Museum hours are Thursdays, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Fridays through Sundays, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Ron says you’re welcome to bring your dog, as long as you can carry him or her, and be sure he or she is on a leash.
